Anatomy of a Taliban ambush

July 16, 2010

Journeyman Pictures has a behind the scenes look at Taliban planning and ambush of supply vehicles. They are well supplied and armed (notice the heavy long-range DShK anti-aircraft gun and RPK machine gun).

Tactics and ambushes like this serve to underscore an obviously simple fact, that without controlling the egress and mountainsides, ambushes like these cannot be prevented. Controlling vast mountainsides requires thousands of troops and supply routes, as well as a much increased helicopter ground support. It feels as if we are beginning to walk in Soviet Afghan shoes.
