The importance of using proper vocabulary

January 14, 2010

I noticed and read recently how casual terms are being used when talking about terrorism and insurgency. One common term is ‘Islamic fundamentalism’ or ‘Islamofascism’ or other such varieties.

David Kilcullen talks about using the term ‘Takfiri extremist’, meant to describe the enemy while at the same time not give them any legitimacy amongst their own people by calling them anything ‘Islamic’.

This paper “To Kill or not to Kill” talks about this issue in more depth, and I think is a very valuable primer for understanding ideology and the very language that we use to describe it.
